Reminder: Porsche Concours Event At The Elms Mansion In Newport 9/6 10am

Now that we are all back to school, all of you - my fellow automobilisti - are reminded that what I think is the best Porsche event on the calendar is coming up this Saturday 9/6 at 10am at the Elms in Newport. As you can see from the photo above, the venue is breathtaking on its own. Now add a few hundred Porsche's of all sizes, shapes, colors, and vintages - and you and your kids - and you have the makings of some fine memories.

I believe I packed a picnic lunch last time and ate on the grounds there with my son. This was a few years ago so maybe they will have some food on offer but I'd bring my own picnic again anyway. The weather forecast looks good right now with a chance or rain later in the evening. So rain gear just in case may not be a bad thing to have in the car.

Heading over to Castle Hill is amazing no matter what the weather so plan to join us for that stop before we leave town too!

Borrow one of my cars and you can park on the grass for $20. Or bring your own Porsche if you don't like mine. Let me know who's in so we can meet up!

Sounds like a fun time with lots of cool cars! I have other engagements taking a party of ship buffs as many decks down as possible. Those places are like hell in Dante's Inferno, you need a Cicero to guide you through as most people would not know to recognize the dangers. Steep ladders, oily surfaces, 440V electric systems with solid looking wires sporting a well abated asbestos coat that are just one wrong handholding grab as you're cresting a steep ladder to shower you with all kinds of nastiness... It actually smells more like metal and combustibles and hydrocarbonated vapors than a real track day. Some wives may refer to it as "Eau de Heavy Cruiser" with variable pheromonic effects. But it's an awesome glimpse into a time when this country was capable of actually making things, and multiple layers of society came together to create a harmonious, well working system and machine. They didn't need (as much) welfare, and they certainly didn't need as much school (most of it is useless conditioning best ignored as it makes you dumb and easily controllable). Try looking at the pair of 1192hp emergency diesel generators, each with intake louvers and valve covers that can be removed with enough persistence by a child to reveal a 7 valve per cylinder design; this was a turbodiesel from the mid 1940's! Step into the old machinery spaces, see a 30,000+hp steam turbine engine set next to its boiler and reduction gears, it looks like a Miyazakian monster from the past as is common in his films. This especially from the lower level with all the small steam and backup electric pumps for sea water, feed water and of course, luboil. Imagine the 140'+ temperature these 18 year olds were subjected to for long hours, after not much training entrusted to manage a steam drum system where the controls, regarding the "gauges" fed by pressurized steam condensing as water were backwards due to the physics of evaporation, where a mistake could within seconds release a fatal explosion of 640psi, 850'F steam. No, it did not look like clouds, that would be steam that is condensing back to water, this stuff could cut a broomstick in half with just a microscopic leak in one of the lines and this was the litmus test to check for leaks back in the day! Here is a good view of the folks coming to visit us when they themselves toured the USS Salem's sister ship, the USS Des Moines CA-134, just before she was scrapped back in 2006. The interiors are very similar as they were both mothballed in 1959-1960's so had the same paint schemes going into retirement. A time capsule to the 1940's/early 50's. Great to see well illuminated, but so much spookier and more suggestive with just a flashlight. Happily the USS Salem is much shinier, and thanks to the recent work parties of volunteers and a generous local donor has a new coat of paint!
